Multi-Grain Porridge

Suitable for babies 6 months & above *

To make the Multi-grain Porridge mix

Ingredients

1 Cup of each Rice + Finger Millet + Whole wheat +Peanuts +Almonds each and a 3/4th cup of Green gram dal (Moong Dal)+ 3/4th cup Split Bengal gram dal (Channa Dal)

1/2 a teaspoon of Carom (Ajwain)

Step 1:

Wash Finger millet and whole wheat separately and soak in water each separately for 8-10 hours.

Step2:

After 10 hours drain the water and keep the grains covered in a cheese cloth and let it sprout for a day.

Step 3:

Wash the rice and let all the three grains to sun dry. Make sure you cover it with a muslin cloth to keep away the dust.

Step 4:

Dry roast all the other ingredients separately. Take care not to over roast, if it does the nutrition might be lost during the process.

(If sun drying is not possible, you can also dry roast the rice, finger millet and wheat.)

Step 5:

Let them cool down. When they are cooled, put everything into a blender or a food processor and blend until you get a fine powder.

Step 6:

Sieve it to make sure there are no large pieces.

Step 7:

Store in an air tight container for up to a month or refrigerate for up to 3 months.

To make the Porridge:

  • Take about 2 tablespoons of the Multi-grain porridge mix and add about 1/4th cup of water and mix well to form a paste.
  • Then add another cup of water/milk and boil on medium heat until it’s boiling.Keep stirring or the mixture will get lumpy.
  • Add more water/milk if it gets too thick. Simmer for about 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Add jaggery to taste.
  • When done transfer it to a bowl and serve warm with 1/4th teaspoon of clarified butter/ghee.

Note:

a). Dry roasting everything separately is important because some take a little longer than others to get roasted.

b). If the baby is older you may stop blending when the mixture is coarse.

c) Sprouting helps in easy digestion.

d). For better results , blend the whole wheat and finger millet separately and then mix it to the rest of the ingredients. It takes a lot of blending to get these two into fine powder.

e). This recipe is a tried out recipe. I have been giving this to my toddler since she was 6 month old. I am sharing the recipe out of personal experience and I am not a nutritionist.

* Talk to your doctor before introducing solid food to your baby. You may want to avoid adding peanuts if  your baby is younger than 12 months.
