My now eight year old daughter is obsessed with outer space. She aspires to be an Astronaut when she grows up so, when we decided to redecorate her bedroom, the only theme that we had in mind was the “Outer Space”. My husband and I decorated her room with the outer space elements as a surprise on her birthday.
I looked up on the internet for inspiration but I hardly found any girls bedroom ideas that uses an outer space theme. So, I started looking at the shopping websites to see if I can get decor pieces for the room within my budget. Although there were so many things with decor items, space themed bedding, to my disappointment everything was more of dark blue, items which might have been designed for a boys room.
I wanted to create a space for my daughter which had outer space elements as well as girly touches. I also didn’t know if she would be interested in outer space a year down the line, which is why I tried to keep things minimal and budget friendly. Since we are renting our current place, painting the room was out of question and also trying to keep the costs low, we chose not to use any wall papers either.
BEDDING
My daughter has a queen bed because our plan is to have the girls eventually sleep together in a room but right now the little one sleeps in her crib. So, it’s only my oldest who uses this bed. We had the pink sheet set from Ikea so, we decided to keep the same as my daughter loves the color pink.

Few things to consider while decorating your kids room:
- Have a plan before you start shopping that we you know what to look for and you won’t be overwhelmed with the options.
- If your child is older (5years and up) discuss with them on what they like and if they have any wishlist for their room.
- Give yourself some time to think before you commit to big changes like painting the room or the ceilings a different color.
- Try incorporating the things that you already have at home into your design.
- Everything need not be matching or have to contain the theme.Contrast colors work as well.
- Free printable or the one’s from Etsy are a great way to brighten up the room. All you need to do is to buy the photo frames.
- Don’t forget the storage. You cannot not have enough storage in a child’s bedroom.
- Sometimes, things don’t turn out the way we like so expect things can go wrong. But remember that it can always be changed.
- Invest in the item that your child needs everyday and uses the most. Like, the mattress or the bedding.Always choose bedding made from natural fibers preferably cotton. It’s soft and gentle on the kids delicate skin.
WALL ART
I decided to use these wall art that I purchased from amazon over the bed and a party banner from her birthday party as the garland.
DESK AREA
These are the things we owned already and put into re-use in this room.
Blue Utility Cart : Ikea
Pink Task Lamp : Pottery Barn Teen
Magnetic Wall hanger : H&M
Wall art is from a KIWI crate box.
Grey Chair: Wayfair
This beautiful mobile with earthy colors that look like planets was definitely a splurge. The mobile is from Pottery Barn Kids.
Books are a great way to decorate any room. Look for outer space themed books like this one from DK publications which not only looks great in this corner but also holds a lot of visuals and information about the Universe.
These wooden rockets were a Christmas present and they are from Bed bath and beyond. They are rocket ships with interchangeable parts that can be screwed on to one another to form a rocket of your choice. Again, I am using a functional piece as a decor.
STORAGE
The storage cubby for Target is a great way to store all the toys in your child’s bedroom. It keeps everything contained and organized. This system makes the clean up a easy for the kids.
