How to take great pictures of your children on the iPhone?

We come across beautiful pictures on the instagram and would want to take some great pictures of our kids too. Or may be you would like to be a social influencer or would want to start a blog and would want to take beautiful photos. But you don’t want to invest in a DSLR carry it around you instead of the handy iPhone. Then you are at the right place. I have five great tips that will help you take great pictures of your kids on the iPhone.

As parents, we want to capture as many memories of our kids everyday. We save those pictures so that, one day they will be all grown up and we can all sit back looking through those pictures and remember the beautiful childhood times. I believe in capturing family moments in the form of pictures. Having said that, it’s not possible for me to reach for the my DSLR at all the time. So, having an iPhone has been a blessing for this mamma.

So, after taking thousands of pictures of my kids I think I am ready to share the tips I have learned over these years to take great pictures of my kids.

FIVE TIPS TO TAKE GREAT PICTURES OF YOUR KIDS ON YOUR IPHONE

GREAT LIGHTING: Have your kids sit by the window or in a place with great lighting whenever possible. A good lighting makes your photo ten times better than the rest. It also helps reduce the noise in your photo. Shoot outside in the shade or have the sun behind your subject to get amazing results.

BACKGROUND: It’s important to have a clutter free background so that your subject is the main point of focus. A plain wall makes a good backdrop. Presentation boards also work as a great back drop and you can decorate it to your liking. It works really well when photographing babies/toddlers.

TRY PORTRAIT MODE : This is a great option if you are taking pictures of real life moments and the background is messy. Portrait mode helps you to blur out the background of the image and also helps achieve sharper photos. For great results have your f-stop set between 1.8 to 3.2.

ADDING PROPS : Ever wondered how to take a simple photo to a wow looking one? Try adding props! It can be anything that you have around the house like toys, dolls, blankets, flowers or balloons. Just create a beautiful theme and trust me, you will be pleased with the results.

GET DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL : A picture of a child taken at an adult’s eye level do not give the best results. Next time try getting down to their level and click the picture. This gives a whole new perspective and the child will most likely to connect with you during the photo session.

FOCUS ON THE EYES : As you get down to their level, focus on the eyes. This makes the child stand out in the picture and there won’t be any pictures with blurry faces.

TAKE AS MANY SHOTS AS YOU LIKE : It is very difficult to click pictures of a child when they are playing or moving around continuously. Use burst mode or take pictures when using the video mode.

TRY DIFFERENT ANGLES : Light is the key factor to any good picture. When you change the angle at which you shoot, you are not only changing the point of view you are also letting light into the lens in a different way. This helps capture some amazing pictures.

COMPOSITION : Try different compositions while framing your shots. If you don’t want to end up with an unflattering image, compose the shots in an interesting way. For example, it’s okay to have negative spaces in the photo. Capture some details like the tiny hands, or focus on an accessory. The best way to easily compose your picture is to use the rule of thirds. Go to Settings–>Camera–>turn on the grid option. This will help you apply the rule of thirds. If you don’t know what rule of thirds is, it is basically your picture divided by 3 vertical and 3 horizontal imaginary lines forming 9 equal segments. Place your child in one or more of these segments, make sure you have the focus point is at the intersection of the two lines. See the examples below for better understanding.

TAKE SOME TIME TO EDIT: Editing the pictures takes them to a next level so you don’t want to skip this. It’s also a great opportunity to fix overexposed or underexposed pictures without having to click the pictures all over again. The inbuilt iPhone editing feature is great and you can do a lot of things to your photo with this feature. Photoshop Express photo editor and VSCO are my other favorite apps to use for editing.

These are some of my tips that I use everyday as I take pictures of my children on my iPhone. Ultimately, it all comes down to practicing taking more and more pictures. Capture those candid moments, tell stories through your pictures and keep those memories safe. Happy clicking mammas!!!
